In 1954 he won first prize for the design of his coat at the International Wool Secretariat of France (now the International Woolmark Prize), and in 1955 he was hired by Pierre Balmain, who put his design into production. Three years later he became artistic director of Jean Patou's fashion house. According to Karl Lagerfeld's official website, the designer became one of the first freelancers in the fashion industry and spent his time working between France, Italy, England and Germany.
